What we're about

Beautiful stories from a chaotic world...

Blue Hour's mission is to tell authentic stories about our self-made messes so we can thrive & survive this chaotic world together.

Our history

The name “Blue Hour” refers to the time around dusk when the skies of the Pacific Northwest transform into a deep, vibrant blue. A daily reminder of the natural world’s beauty and wonder, and of its enduring worthiness of our respect and appreciation. Founder Brian Brooks earned his B.A. in Acting/Directing from UNC Greeley in 2004 and was deeply involved in Denver’s community theatre scene until 2014, when he relocated to Seattle with his wife, Cat Brooks. There, Brian met fellow actor and director Greg LoProto during a production of 'Reckless'. The two later reunited for the intense two-man drama 'A Steady Rain', which ran at the Pocket Theater in Greenwood. Inspired by his studies in renewable energy at Shoreline Community College, Brian envisioned a theatre company that explored the intersection of art and environmental awareness. The result was Blue Hour Theatre Group, founded by Brian and Cat, with a mission to tell stories that reflect both the beauty of the natural world and the consequences of our actions upon it. Blue Hour’s inaugural production, 'Two Degrees', was staged at the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in 2019. After seeing the show, Greg LoProto began writing original work for the company, starting with 'Drowned Cats', which was later selected for the 2024 New Art City Theatre Festival. His next play, The Plague Master General (a bubonic comedy), explored government mishandling of public health crises, drawing sharp parallels between the past and present. The production earned critical acclaim, played to sold-out audiences, and received six Broadway World nominations including Best Play, as well as a Gregory Award nomination for Best Original Script in 2024. In 2022, Sara Schweid joined Blue Hour, leading the charge in marketing and outreach and strengthening the company’s commitment to building a vibrant, inclusive community where artists feel welcome, valued, and empowered.
